I have a house full of boys and don’t often get to decorate my home using shades of pink; lately pink has been holding a special place in my heart. Valentine’s Day gives me the perfect opportunity to add some pink to my decor. I have a serious pillow problem and love pillows, so I decided to make a painted heart pillow for Valentine’s Day using a painter’s drop cloth. To keep this project fast and fun, so I decided to do a no-sew envelope pillow.
I picked up some pretty tulips from my local market and was instantly drawn to the shades of pink and the green stem. I love decorating with shades of green in my home and love how pink and green complement each other.
Materials For This Painted Drop Cloth Pillow Cover
- Canvas Drop Cloth
- Paint
- Paint brush
- Newspaper for the heart design template
- Hem tape (optional)
- Glue gun
- Glue sticks
Using the tulips as inspiration, I picked out two paint samples to consider– Fresh Peonies and Pinkety Pink, both from Glidden. You may have to ask about those colors at the Home Depot paint desk, but the associate there will be able to mix it for you. I loved how pretty the lighter Fresh Peonies looked and used that color for my heart.
Step 1
This is my first time using a canvas drop cloth as home décor fabric and I liked it. The fabric is nice and thick and easy to work with.
Fabric cuts: one 21 x 21 inch, one 16 x 21 inch and one 11 x 21 inch piece of fabric. Iron each piece until they are wrinkle free.
Step 2
Fold a newspaper page in half and draw half of a heart, then cut it out. Center the heart template on your 21 x 21 inch fabric panel and trace the shape using a pencil. Paint the inside of your heart with the paint you selected.
Allow your painted Valentine heart to dry for several hours.
Step 3
Next, using the hem tape or a glue gun, fold your fabric edges over about ½-inch on the 16 x 21 panel and hem.
Repeat that step for the hem the 11 x 21 panel piece.
Step 4
Now it’s time to assemble the envelope pillow. With the heart face-up towards you, place the 16 x 21 inch panel on top of the heart with the exposed hem facing up on one end of the pillow, then place the 11 x 21 inch piece on the other end of the pillow, again with the raw hem facing up.
Remember once the pillow is made you will turn it inside out.
Next, use hem tape iron all four sides of the outside. I reinforced all four corners on my pillow and envelope opening sides using my glue gun.
Next, turn your pillow right-side out and place a pillow insert inside. You can read about my favorite pillow inserts to use on my blog.
I love how my painted Valentine heart pillow turned out. The pink color complements my living room and is such a great addition. The color also inspired my homemade Valentine dessert tray, filled with pink cupcakes, chocolate-dipped donuts covered in pink sprinkles, and my pillow heart inspired brownie hearts.
