DIY Ideas for the Christmas Mantel

After the Christmas tree, the Christmas mantel, or whatever substitutes for a mantel, is the focal point for Christmas decorating indoors.

Chelsea Curtis of Housewife2Hostess came up with some simple and lovely DIY Christmas mantel ideas for our Holiday Style Challenge. We sent her some Home Depot Christmas decorations and other materials, and gave her the prompt “stockings.”

Her DIY Christmas stockings are so cute and super easy to make, as are her other Christmas decorating ideas. She even got her husband to build an outdoor fireplace so she’d have a mantel to decorate for the holidays!

Decorating the Christmas Mantel

I was totally ready to be a part of the Home Depot Christmas Style Challenge, that is, until I found out what my mystery item was… Stockings!? So there I am, slack jawed just staring at my box. Thoughts like, “I don’t even have a fireplace in my house.” But it IS called a Challenge, so challenge accepted, Home Depot!

Building the Fireplace

Building an outdoor fireplace

Since I didn’t have a fireplace inside my house, and you can’t have stockings without a fireplace mantel, I just decided to build one.

Allow me to clarify, when I say “l”, I really mean my handy husband Nick would build it. And what are the odds? I already had the perfect spot picked out and everything!

After a very busy month and eight days of rainy weather, we (he) actually pulled it off! There are still a few tweaks before we can actually use it, but isn’t it gorgeous!?

Now to the DIY Christmas mantel ideas and my DIY Christmas stockings.

Spray Paint Deer Makeover

For my Christmas mantel, I started with the gorgeous pair of deer with the glittery antlers– the Winter’s Wonder Gold Sitting Reindeer and the Winter’s Wonder Gold Standing Reindeer.

I wasn’t crazy about the color of their bodies, so using Frog Tape, I taped the antlers off and painted them with high gloss Rust-Oleum white spray paint. I really wanted them to stand out and pop, especially against the more natural/woodsy color scheme of the other things.

Frosted Wreath With Burlap Ribbon

Sticking with the outdoorsy theme, I “frosted” the wreath and garland with textured off-white Rust-Oleum spray paint– Multi-Colored Textured Caribbean Sand Spray Paint— just lightly spraying until it looked like a little fresh snow had fallen on them. I kept it simple by weaving burlap ribbon through both of them and to match the stockings.

DIY Drop Cloth And Burlap Christmas Stockings

To make these simple stockings I just took a piece of paper and cut it into a stocking shape that I liked. I cut two reverse pieces of canvas drop cloth, using the paper as my pattern and sewed them together.

I turned them right side out then ironed them and finished them off by hot glueing drop cloth and burlap ruffles on the top and topping them off with a large bow. This would be a great (and quick) craft idea to do with older kids or even as a girls night! So simple.

LED Lanterns

I know someone is going to ask so, the gorgeous lanterns were found at The Home Depot on clearance. They’re very similar to this LED lantern.

I had SO much fun participating in this Holiday Style Challenge. I love my Christmas mantel, and that I (thanks to Nick) now have an outdoor fireplace! Bring on the marshmallow roasts and hot cocoa!
