There’s probably someone on your Christmas list who would benefit from a mini desk makeover. Here’s one of our DIY gift ideas that will be perfect. You can knock out this DIY desk organizer in an afternoon, and give your loved one the gift of organization and peace of mind!
Here are the step-by-step instructions.
Materials for this DIY Desk Organizer:
-
Whitewood Pine Board (Cut to your specifications in store. Cut a size that will fit for your desk space!)
- Decorative Brackets: Decorative Wood Brackets or Scroll Brackets
- Gorilla Glue – wood glue
- Hammer & Nail
- Sander block
- Varathan Weathered Gray Stain or Rust-Oleum Spray Paint (Depending on what type of finished product you want!)
Step 1
Prep your cut whitewood surface by sanding any sharp edges or rough areas.
Step 2
Measure how far apart you want your decorative brackets to be. We based our measurements around 2- to 3-inch sections. You can customize this step based on what you’re organizing – magazines, books, moleskins, etc.
Tip: Make a marking where both edges should sit, because when you pick up the bracket to apply the glue (in the next step) you need to know exactly where to place it back down.
Step 3
Glue down your decorative brackets with Gorilla Glue Wood Glue.
Let the wood glue dry according to package directions.
Step 4 (Optional)
For an extra precaution, you can secure the brackets with a nail or two.
Tip: Make sure that the nail you’re using isn’t longer than the width of the area you’re nailing it into. You wouldn’t want the tip of the nail poking out and ruining the look!
Step 5
Pick a color or stain. We made two versions of this desk organizer, one we sprayed white for a simple and glossy look, the other is stained Varathane Weathered Gray.
Don’t forget to allow plenty of dry time. Set up your new desk organizer, add in your most important notebooks and favorite magazines. Then sit back and admire your newly organized command center!
There are so many options for what you can do with this wood organizer, the possibilities are endless! Make another version for the kitchen to organize cookbooks – or try it on the mantle, on your bedside table – anywhere your organizing heart desires!
