Christmas Decorating Ideas for a Cozy Family Room by Grace Mitchell of A Storied Style

A lot goes into creating a warm, cozy family room decorated for Christmas. It takes colors, textures, finishes, and as we’ll see, even the right smells.

Grace Mitchell is the author of the interior design and DIY blog A Storied Style. She accepted our Holiday Style Challenge, in which we send our favorite design mavens mystery boxes of holiday decorations from The Home Depot. We then stand back while they come up with their impressive and practical Christmas decorating ideas.

The Christmas decor Grace put together for her family room is breathtaking. It’s elegant, yet comfortable. It’s also the perfect comfy place for a family with little ones to create new Christmas memories. Grace shows us how she pulled it all together, and she shares some of her DIY Christmas decorating ideas.

(And look for photos of her adorable family, too!)

Christmas is going to be really fun for my husband and I this year as all four of our children are past the infant stage (this is our first holiday season in a long time to not have a little baby), and they can understand and appreciate holidays a little more. All four of them are now toddler age and up (they are all a year apart), so they have been super enthusiastic about the holidays and the fun and excitement they bring.

For this Home Depot Style Challenge, I decided to choose the newest space in our 1921 home, a one-room addition we have just completed. It has been a long fourteen-month road to get it done, so I was thrilled to start decorating it. (finally!)

Christmas Garlands and Wreaths

My first order of business was to create the beautiful ornament garland that hangs above the sofa.

Using twine, I strung together two 101-count Martha Stewart red and gold ornament sets, and four of these silver ornament sets. I used ribbon to make bows for the center and the ends of the garland. Stringing the garland ended up being a fun activity that the kids could help me with, plus it really makes the room! All of the detailed instructions on how I made it and how I hung it will be on the blog soon. (since we just finished this room, I did NOT want any holes in the walls!)

I also wanted something really festive and pretty above my table in this room so I took two of the Martha Stewart Tiffany Cedar Wreaths, placed them back to back, and attached some wide red satin ribbon so it could hang from the ceiling. (step-by-step instructions on the blog soon) Then I hung another box of the red and gold ornaments from the wreath to complete the look. These ornaments are so striking in real life!

Just a little side note…while perusing The Home Depot a couple of weeks ago, I spotted these scent sticks shown below and thought I would give them a try. This spruce scent smells amazing, and I actually placed them in the wreath above my table. You cannot see they are there, and the smell makes me happy every time I come in the door!

Behind the table, I tied this gorgeous ribbon in pretty bows around my sconces. Here is a pack of ribbon that contains something similar.

Christmas Tablescapes

It was fun putting together my Christmas tablescape for this room. I decided to make it a hot chocolate and sweets theme, and everyone in my house was very happy about it! I used the red and gold snowflake ornaments from my Martha Stewart boxed sets as glittery table doilies, and mixed in my favorite vintage Santa mugs and hot chocolate tureen with some yummy treats!

Also accenting the table were these candle trees, and a silly gnome that I spray painted with Rust-Oleum gold glitter paint. The sparkle made him much happier, see his little hands? He was basically pleading for a makeover.

For coffee and side table décor, I like to mix older pieces with new. New and old books topped with a glass container of our antique “special” ornaments, a white ceramic vase filled with beautiful, budding rosemary from my kind neighbor’s yard, and three, tiny, vintage brass camels adorn the coffee table.

Atop the marble side table, an antique pair of child-sized wooden shoe molds rest next to a set of mercury glass votives.

Alternative Christmas Trees

We don’t really have room for a full-size Christmas tree in this space, so I had the idea to use a pair of real trees that could sit on top of our storage cabinet. I picked up two dwarf size spruce trees at The Home Depot, and they should be fine to plant after Christmas since this room is so sunny.

The kids had a great time decorating them (they are just their size!) using this red and gold mini ornament set  and this brown and gold mini ornament set.

Of course, I wanted something pretty to put these trees in, but I didn’t want to spend too much money on planters since the trees would only be in this room temporarily. However, I wanted to get something I would use again.

I found these black, plastic pots that had a chalkboard feel to tie in with the chalkboard prints I made that hang above the sofa (tutorial on the blog soon). It was so easy to use my chalk marker to highlight the outline of the pattern on the planters, plus make my own Christmas design in the center. When the holidays are over, I can easily wipe away my Christmas design with a paper towel and water and create something new.

Christmas Lights, LED Candles, Etc.

The rug in front of my wood storage cabinet is the Flokati Rug from Home Decorators Collection, and the thick, wooly feel is very fitting and comfortable during these cold months.

During the day, this room is so pleasant to be in with all of the windows and the sparkle of the Christmas decor, but I especially love it at night.

The glow from our icicle lights and the lovely lighted trees outside our door make our home feel so cozy. We’ve been spending a lot of time in here listening to Christmas music, reading books, and drinking hot chocolate. You can see in the first picture below that I am asking who wants marshmallows in their mugs. Clearly, I had four enthusiastic takers.

It’s times like these I will always remember and hope my children never forget.

The flameless tea lights above fit perfectly in the mercury glass votives and give off a warm glow without me having to worry about burned fingers. Win-win.

This room is such a special gathering space for our family, and I could not be happier with how festive it has become for the holidays. I hope you have enjoyed my reveal, and stay tuned to A Storied Style for more details, tutorials, and DIY’s from this room and its transformation.
