Christmas Decorating Ideas: A Black, White and Gold Living Room

We might not think of mirrored disco balls as Christmas decorating material. But maybe we should, especially in the hands of Kristin Jackson, the creative mind behind The Hunted Interior.

Kristin took us up on our Holiday Style Challenge, in which we send some of our favorite design bloggers a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorating goodies, and let them amaze us with their Christmas decorating ideas.

Kristin created a comfy and inviting holiday living room in a neutral palette of black, white and gold, with lots of wonderful shiny surfaces and unexpected textures. Take a look at the gorgeous photos of her family room for some real Christmas decor inspiration.

Decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite things to do… maybe it’s all the sparkle that’s involved?!? I am a self professed magpie. So when The Home Depot asked me to participate in the Style Challenge again I couldn’t have been more excited… And then I was given the free-for-all “Wild Card” space, meaning I could do whatever space I wanted with the items that arrived. Bonus!

I had a few ideas in mind before I received the mystery boxes of Christmas decorations from The Home Depot, but when I laid my eyes on the woodland chic mix of items… (that’s what I am calling it!) I knew exactly what space to tackle: Our Living Room.

Christmas Decorating Ideas: A Black, White and Gold Living Room

Wanting to showcase the gorgeous copper, bronze, gold and silver ornaments I received from the Martha Stewart Living Collection, I decided to let them share the spotlight with a little classic black & white. The glittered pinecones, mercury glass birds and my little collection of disco balls all played together nicely. I also disassembled a few of the wreaths I received in my mystery box, cut them into smaller branches and flocked them myself. I simply tucked a few of the branches into the tree to add another wintery layer into the mix.

Christmas Decorating Ideas: Ornaments in a Basket

Not really a tradition gal myself, I was surprised to find myself not being able to let go of two holiday decorating elements this year… our Disco Ball Tree Topper and our faux fur around the tree base. I started incorporating these items into our decor last year and feel they will be here to stay for awhile, in our home at least. Rather than messing with a tree skirt I find the faux fur softens the look and adds a texture that immediately evokes a cozy and chic feel.

Christmas Decorating Ideas: Throw Pillow with Holiday Message

The Marie Armchair from Home Decorators Collection was the perfect touch to our living room, not only for the holidays. Its traditional lines play nicely with our spotted drapery panels (that I just recently stenciled!) and our festive Eat Drink and Be Merry Pillow from Michelle Dwight Designs.

Christmas Decorating Ideas: Starburst Mirror with Christmas Cards

Our Martha Stewart Living Starburst Mirrors (which are one of the best deals around if you ask me!) are a great place to display the many Christmas cards we receive throughout the season. I love how they become evolving works of art as more and more cards arrive.

Christmas Decorating Ideas: Disco Ball Under Side Table Decorated for Christmas

Being a sucker for trees in urns, my heart skipped a beat when I unwrapped these two flocked beauties. Filled with snow, pinecones (& yes glitter!) these pre-lit trees would be great addition to any holiday decor. Adding some simple striped bows and a few metallic ornaments helped to tie these two trees to the main tree. Having them flank our handmade console allowed the warmth of the Christmas lights to fill this end of the room as well. One of my favorite parts of the season…

Christmas Decorating Ideas: Wreath with Deer Wall Hanging

Our friend “Blitzen,” as our three-year-old has named him, was graced with a simple wreath and a classic bow. A few mini ornaments were tucked in for just a little more sparkle. I love how festive he looks.

Christmas Decorating Ideas: Canvas Bag Advent Calendar

Wanting to incorporate an Advent calendar this year, I created one using muslin favor bags & Rust-Oleum’s Gold Glitter Spray Paint. Hanging them on our bamboo ladder is the perfect place for our daughter to come out and see each morning. This will be an exciting way to countdown to Christmas.

I can’t wait to celebrate this year with our family. The magic will really be in the air with a three year old running around!
