This ceramic tile gift tag (or tree ornament) is fun to make and will help you dress up gifts in your own special way. It’s one of the Christmas craft ideas we have for the holiday season. Here are the step-by-step instructions, along with a downloadable version of the tutorial.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 2 hours, including drying time
Cost: Less than $15
Tools and Materials
- ¼-in. Masonry drill bit
- Foam brush
- Rubbing alcohol
- 4 ¼ in. × 4 ¼ in. ceramic tiles
- Metallic paint
- Spray adhesive
- Clear spray paint
Mark two spots 5/8 inch down and 5/8 inch over from both top corners.
Drill holes in those spots.
Wipe the tile with rubbing alcohol to clean it.
Do not touch it after that.
Spray the back of the stencil with adhesive and place it on the tile.
Paint the tile over the stencil with the metallic paint using the foam brush. Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet. Be careful to lift the stencil straight up from the tile, making sure not to smear the wet paint. Let the paint dry completely.
Lay your painted tiles on a cookie sheet and place them in the oven at 325 degrees.
After 30 minutes, turn the oven off and let the tiles cool down slowly inside the oven. This will help the paint cure correctly.
If desired, spray a clear coat on the tiles to protect the paint.
Lace the ribbon through the holes from the front and tie a knot.
Attach your tile to the ribbon on a package, or give as a personalized DIY gift for your friends.
