We’ve been waiting all year for the right opportunity to talk about the re-emergence of the tufted look in contemporary interior design. And when we saw this upholstered living room accent wall on Better Homes and Gardens, we decided we’d tufted out long enough. Once considered a more traditional design element, forward-thinking designers and DIYers are reinterpreting this style in fresh ways.

From chairs to ottomans, DIY headboards and even living room accent walls, tufting is adding a touch of visual interest and glamour to rooms of various styles. Here are a few living rooms with accent walls that are tufted we’ve been dying to show you.

Tufting can absolutely enhance the character of a fabric. Velvets look softer, leathers more supple, and as you can see in this image from Elle Interior – satins seem shiner, too. The luxe look of this tufted living room accent wall plays well with the mix of traditional and modern furnishings, from the Louis XV-inspired sofa and moulding details to the mohair area rug.

Accent walls are a very nice way of creating focal points in a space. But, if you’re finding it tuft to commit to an entire wall, wainscoting a living room wall with tufted accents is an interesting and intriguing option.

While tufted accents are more often seen in bedrooms where they can add a comfy layer of texture to the room, they look equally warm and cozy in a formal dining space just off the living room as well. Especially so when illuminated by sparkling chandeliers.
