In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.
Interior decorator Bryn Dunn participated in our Holiday Style Challenge, and we loved the space she created. She’s back with a complete backyard patio makeover for our Patio Style Challenge. She transformed her brick patio into a lovely outdoor living space, beginning with a new patio furniture set from The Home Depot. Along the way she also hung outdoor lights, refreshed an old picnic table and set out new potted plants and herbs. And best of all, she shows us exactly how she did it!
The sun has been shining and temperatures are just starting to warm up… I think Spring is finally on its way. And what perfect timing – our patio is now ready! This is how our neglected patio looked before:
I’ve always loved outdoor spaces that are a little bit rustic and imperfect. When designing my patio makeover, I was drawn to patio inspiration pictures that had large collections of plants in weathered pots, casually hung bistro lights and weathered elements like wood and brick. I took those elements and brought them into my own patio!
When we started our patio makeover, we pressure washed the brick on our patio to clean it. It didn’t, however, remove the weathered look to the brick, and I was glad for that! I loved the character that the old, weathered brick brought to the space, and it really helped keep that “rustic” and “imperfect” vibe I was going for.
One of my favorite elements we added to our patio are four 4″ x 4″ x 10′ posts that were installed to hold our new string lights. My husband supported the posts in the ground with quick-setting concrete. We then strung commercial grade string lights on ⅛” steel wire and secured them with wire clamps. The wooden posts were weather treated (which gives them a greenish hue), so I applied Danish Oil in Dark Walnut to them to give them a more natural look.
We’ve owned the picnic table for about a year now, but it was in need of a major makeover, too! I spray painted the base of the picnic table using Satin Black Rust-Oleum Universal Paint and Primer, and applied the same Danish Oil in Dark Walnut I used on the posts to the seats and the top. I love how it turned out! It’s amazing what a little paint and stain can do.
I also knew I wanted fresh herbs in my new patio makeover. I planted them in small terra cotta pots and labeled them with permanent market. I then placed the pots on slabs of slate we had laying around the backyard. I like that the slate acts as a platform for the pots, but they also prevent the table from getting damaged when I water the herbs.
One of my favorite things I did during my patio makeover was picking out all my new plants in the The Home Depot Garden Center. Although my patio furniture and decor is neutral, I brought in color with purple and hot pink plants and flowers. I also faux-antiqued my terra cotta pots by mixing Lime Powder and water and brushing the mixture on the pots.
The biggest change to our patio, and my personal favorite, is our new Hampton Bay Woodbury Patio Seating Set. I love that this set looks like wicker, but is plastic and is much more weather resistant! The simple styling of the seating and neutral fabric on the cushions worked perfectly with my rustic and natural patio design plan. I knew we would use this set a lot, so I kept the throw pillows simple by just adding two striped lumbars on the loveseat.
The white side table is a wicker piece that my husband and I actually found on the side of the road! It was discarded as a piece of trash, but I love how it goes with our new patio set. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
I can’t wait to lounge with my husband under the glow of our string lights this summer! I know we’ll be spending a lot of time out here!
