DIY Halloween Decorations: Spooky Halloween Garland

Here at The Home Depot Blog, it’s not Halloween without our annual visit to Love Manor, the amazing haunted house created by Hollywood production designer Johnny Love. He creates some of the best and most creative DIY Halloween decorations you’ll ever see. In years past, he’s contributed to our Halloween Style Challenge showing how he created  eerie ghost paintings and haunted house lighting and a spooky flying monster.

Now, he shows us how he used simple items such as tubing, utility light fixtures and spray paint to create a unique and spooky Halloween garland for his Love Manor. Add some dry ice, lights and a bony friend, and you’ve got yourself the makings of a really cool haunted house for Halloween.

This year’s Style Challenge was… well… a challenge. I always strive to create something truly different, with materials one wouldn’t think to use. Halloween, as I’ve said before, to me is a holiday where you can let your imagination run wild. Anything goes. So with this one I let my imagination run a bit more on the wild side. A bit more on the abstract side. However, to get there it took a few Home Depot visits and countless hours strolling down the aisles to figure this year’s DIY Halloween decorations.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Disneyland and their attention to detail– one of my favorites being The Tower of Terror ride. So that was it, my idea was there. I wanted to create something reminiscent of the beautiful detail that ride contains and the magic and terror it evokes. But I didn’t quite know what that would be… until I got to the electrical aisle at The Home Depot.

That was it. I saw it in my head.

A Tower of Terror-inspired garland complete with caged Edison bulbs and various-sized tubing, hoses, pipes and wires.

So, I began with various sized tubes from all different departments;  electrical, plumbing to the outdoor garden fountain section. I wanted the garland to have detail and depth.

I then used black spray paint to give everything a macabre touch.

For the lighting, I used some old Christmas lights I had in the garage and some 14-gauge wire from The Home Depot complete with screw on sockets.

I then began wiring the sockets at various spots on the wire. I wanted it to look sporadic and not too symmetrical.

What really sold this look was coming upon the plastic caged work lights (these are similar to the ones pictured). I knew these would be the perfect element for this garland and the industrial theme I was going for. I began by removing the cages from the fixtures they came on and then using a metallic spray paint to help them pop from the sea of black piping.

I then ran everything together and used black zip ties to hold it all together.

Now, I know it doesn’t look like much…. However once it’s either hung in a doorway or placed on a mantle and dressed with a layer of creepy cloth curtain, which is also available at The Home Depot, it began to take on a life of its own.

For such an occasion, once must host a Tower of Terror themed dinner party of course.
