Deck Decorating Ideas: Fresh Paint and String Lights

These deck decorating ideas make a big impact without a lot of fuss. Katy Byrne, of DBK: Designs By Katy, shows how coordinating the paint color with the house, and adding just a few simple touches such as string lights and a new patio set can make all the difference.

This is Katy’s contribution to our Patio Style Challenge series. She’s one of several talented designers and stylists who received a patio set from The Home Depot to spark complete patio and deck makeovers that we could share with you.

Katy’s two-tier deck is so lovely, and it’s very functional, including a special consideration for her darling little pooch.

Simple Deck Decorating Ideas for a Big Impact

One of the reasons we bought our home was the fantastic private back yard. Many of the homes here have tiny decks that all back up to your neighbors, allowing for very minimal usable space. Our home backs up to a street, so we have a large privacy fence and a fantastic two-tiered deck.

That is where it ends… The deck finish was more than done and needed some serious love and TLC.

A Deck in Need of Some TLC

Yikes. It has been a place of shame for me ever since we moved in. My husband and I work full time and are both blessed with black thumbs, so reworking the outdoor space was quickly put low on the list.

I’ve never been a fan of the ever expansive beige color that coats our home either, so our small deck decorating idea turned into an entire exterior overhaul: new deck railing and stain with an exterior paint job. I am so happy we made a full commitment.

Our house looks completely different.

We have some natural stone on the front of our house, so I went with a warm and neutral brown to really bring it out.

The next thing I wanted to include was lighting. Lighting, in design, is always the icing on the cake, and who doesn’t dream of pretty patio lights hanging over their porch? Growing up in Texas, lounging on the patio in the heat of summer was not an option. Here in Denver, summer evenings cool to 70 degrees, making for the perfect hang out.

My husband and I are NOT do it yourself-ers, but thanks to some very kind and patient Home Depot associates, we got the perfect coaching on how to hang the string lights.

We took two 10 ft. metal conduit poles and attached them to the railing.

From there we screwed in a metal hook at the top, and easily strung our lights from the poles to the house. The entire project was less than $100. I cannot wait to have friends over to BBQ. What a perfect ambiance.

Patio Furniture

For furnishings, I chose the Hampton Bay Cane Crossing set with chairs and a round chat table.

It is the perfect fit for our upper deck. Topped with a colorful 9  x 13 ft. rug and great accents like these galvanized metal candle lanterns, we are more than set.

Dog Door

One last detail I couldn’t forget was our dog door. Seeing as we have no children, our little nine pound Shih Tzu has become way too important to us. I figured including her space in the renovation was pretty much necessary.

A little creativity and $50 worth of accessories later, Bitty’s door looks more like a luxury apartment entrance than a simple dog door.

Needless to say, we are thrilled with the results and cannot wait for spring to set in. Thanks so much to The Home Depot for including us in such a fantastic Patio Style Challenge. We are leaving with a great space and renewed confidence in our DIY ability!
